A Few Simple Rules For a Healthy Pet
By Sara Tolle
So you have gotten yourself a great pet? You should get it checked out at your Vet's to make sure it is not in possession of any health threatening problems.
Once you know your Sweet Little Buddy is healthy or on its way to health you will want to assure it stays that way.
So now what? How do you accomplish keeping your pet healthy?
You need to ask many questions of your Vet, about food, inoculations. spaying or neutering, scent gland removal (in ferrets for instance) bedding needs and anything else pertinent to the type of pet you have chosen.
Warm blooded pets who frequent the outdoors may be exposed to the deer tick. Risking Lyme disease. Lyme Disease presents itself as lameness of muscle and or joint pain to begin with, and can be missed thinking they have simply strained their leg or legs. Early detection means a simple round of antibiotics will stop this live organism from destroying your Sweety.
Other parasites to be wary of include fleas, ear mites, several types of worms, and mange. Of course fleas, ticks and ear mites can be controlled with regular treatments of a quality flea and tick solution, best obtained from your Vet - at least until you "know" what the quality products look like.
Also the worm infestations are very detrimental to your pets. They can include heart worm, tape worm, round worm, pin worm and wire worm. Just to name a few possibilities. Your Vet will prescribe the correct dosage and type of medicine to eradicate these life threatening parasites.
Now that your pet has a healthy system you will want to put the proper nutrients into them to keep it that way. A book or internet search for the type and breed of animal you have chosen will be very helpful to you. Even different breeds of the same species can have totally different nutritional needs.
Dogs for instance do not do well on foods that contain too much corn. It is good to study the ingredient list on the bag to determine if the product is correct for your breed once you have become familiar with your pet's needs.
And please be aware that grapes, raisins and chocolate can kill your dog. Never allow them to even have a small piece of these.
Follow a few simple rules and have a healthy Sweet Buddy for several years.
